Spunbond polypropylene is now the leading web forming process, accounting for 48.7% of all non-woven fabric consumption in 2015, or about 4.4 million tons. Spunbond polypropylenes include spunbond (polypropylene, polyester, polyethylene, polyamide and bicomponent fibers), meltblown (polypropylene), SMS (spunbond/meltblown/spunbond polypropylene) and others .
Since 2010, Spunbond polypropylene has had the highest growth rate of all processes, reaching an annual growth rate of 8.5% between 2010 and 2015.
This allows Spunbond polypropylene to expand its advantage over the second largest non-woven process dry method. The consumption of drylaid nonwovens increased from 2.9 million tons in 2010 to 3.4 million tons in 2015.
Spunbond polypropylene is expected to have the highest growth rate of all non-woven processes (except for the "other" category) by 2020, with an annual growth rate of 73% from 2015 to 2020. This high growth rate reflects consumption's recovery from the 2008 economic crisis, especially in Western European.
Global demand is expected to get back on track in 2020, ushering in the next healthy global economic cycle. Smithers expects total consumption of spunbond nonwovens to reach 6.2 million tons in 2020.
